THE KURMIS OF BIHAR . IN POLITIS,BUISNESS,EDUCATION

NEW DELHI: The Kurmis' attempt to forge a political and social identity through Sanskritisation is not unique. The Yadavs, the other backward caste in competition with the Kurmis in Bihar, have also done it.

But the Kurmis, unlike the Yadavs, countered their smaller numbers by charting out a pan-India strategy. However, despite education and a wider national presence, they have lagged behind the Yadavs politically.

In 1894, the Kurmis formed their first association in Lucknow to give teeth to their protest against the British decision to cut their numbers in the police force. Realising it was not enough, the Kurmi Sabha of Awadh included peasants like Patidars, Kappus, Vokkaligas, Reddys, Naidus and Marathas of other states in its fold.

By 1910, the All India Kurmi Kshatriya Mahasabha was in place with its call to members to wear the sacred thread and a demand for more job reservation. The Ramanandi sect traced the Kurmis' ancestry to Luv, giving them a Kshatriya status. Similarly, Koeris, another influential backward caste, traced their origin to Kush.

The fight for dignity by the Kurmis metamorphosed into a caste syndicate along with Yadavs and Koeris. In 1933, the Triveni Sangh was named the upper crust of the syndicate. But by the mid-1940s, their superior status wore off, particularly because of the Yadavs' insistence that they were the natural leaders of OBCs.

Nearly five decades later, a similar arrogance by Laloo Prasad Yadav saw parting of ways once again. Formation of Samata Party in 1994 by Nitish Kumar, a Kurmi, formalised a new backward-upper caste alliance (Samata Party and BJP). In 1999, the alliance won 41 of the 54 parliamentary seats in undivided Bihar. But the success was not be repeated a few months later at the assembly polls.

In Bihar's political divide, though Kurmis and Koeris are seen to be on the same side, unity has eluded them. In the 1970s, the All India Kurmi Kshatriya Sabha created a sub-set by bringing in the Koeris. But even there they lacked unity, and Laloo used this in 1998 by foisting Shakuni Chaudhry, a Koeri, as an incarnation of Kush.

Laloo's ascendancy in the early 1990s saw marginalisation of Kurmis. Laloo did implement his 1990-poll promise of increasing OBC reservation, in reality mostly Yadavs gained from it. With the formation of Samata Party, polarisation was complete.In 1894 the Kurmi formed their first association in Lucknow which was named as “Sardar Kurmi Sabha” to protest the British decision to cut their numbers in the military forces. In its 5th conference in 1909, this sabha changed its name to “All India Kurmi Kshatriya Association”. The Kurmi was one of those few castes which did suffer the least atrocities of the British as Kurmi people were mostly zamindars or farmers and would timely pay taxes or grains. In the era of independence, Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel led the Kurmi and is arguably regarded as the greatest leader of the Kurmi. Today, most of the Kurmi are wealthy and land owners with strong political affiliations.
